Karen Frankola, ABC, is an award-winning strategic communications professional. She has deep expertise in strategic planning, digital and social media, intranet content and strategy, video production, writing and editing, change communications, and managing teams to high performance.
Since March, 2010, she has worked in a consultancy position as the Director of Communications and Media for the Policy Innovators in Education (PIE) Network, a national nonprofit connecting 25 advocacy groups in 18 states. She redesigned the network’s website, increasing visits 400% in six months. She also launched a Twitter account, secured placements in national media such as Education Week, created internal and external newsletters, and developed the organization’s first annual report.
In 2010, she managed an integrated public relations and social media campaign for a business author, resulting in interviews with outlets such as CNBC, CNN, BBC, NPR, Reuters, and two Wall Street Journal Op-Eds. In six months, his book sales increased 400%.
In 2009, while director of Internal Communications and Creative Services for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, her team won two IABC Gold Quill awards and Nielsen Norman Group recognized DTT’s intranet as one of the world’s top ten.
Karen launched an in-house video team at Deloitte, described in a 2009 Strategic Communication Management article. Her team developed an internal site to share videos, which won the 2007 International Business Award for corporate communications. Deloitte videos she produced and wrote have won several awards, including the 2008 Communicator Award of Excellence for corporate image.
Karen is a versatile writer and editor with bylines that include Newsweek and Workforce. Her writing includes CEO speeches, video scripts, website copy, podcast scripts, thought leadership, congressional testimony, annual reports, newsletters, marketing materials, and articles. Areas of experience include professional services, banking, education, retail, and research institutions.
As a former Six Sigma Master Black Belt for NBC, Karen excels in change management and metrics-driven strategies. She has introduced new communications tools, such as a global internal wiki at Deloitte and NBC’s first online training.
Karen has managed teams as large as 60 people, with a focus on challenging people to stretch their capabilities. She has extensive experience leading virtual teams and working with colleagues and stakeholders across the world.
Prior to her work with leading corporations and nonprofits, Karen was a broadcast journalist, with management and producing experience at CNN, MSNBC, and local stations.
Karen is an accredited member of the International Association of Business Communicators.
